Choirs

On Song!

Singing is good for you - we all know that.  And most of us love to sing - even if it is only in the bath, or in front of the mirror with a hairbrush.

Following the success of our Gloucester choir, set up in 2007, a second group of older people now also meets to sing together regularly in Stroud.   The Gloucester choir, known as The Silver Singers has performed at our Christmas in the Cathedral event in front of an appreciative audience of 900.

The Stroud choir - The Supertroupers - only began singing together in October 2008 but are already gelling as a group and recently enjoyed putting on a very successful mini concert for family and friends.

Many people love to sing but don't feel that they are "good enough" for what they call a "proper" choir.   So why not join one of our "improper" ones?   Anyone is welcome, whether they have sung before or not.   You don't have to be able to read music, or be a particular fan of classical music.   The choirs sing a very wide range of songs including folk, sacred, popular (Abba songs are proving to be a favourite!), gospel, and songs from the shows.  So there is something for everyone.

Choirs normally meet fortnightly, and there is no membership fee.  Once they are used to singing together and feel confident enough, the choirs visit other places, such as clubs, day centres and residential homes to sing to other older people.   This is an element that our Gloucester singers particularly enjoy.

Now it's Cheltenham's turn!

Our choir in Cheltenham, which meets on Thursday mornings, finally got up and running in the autumn of 2009, after a couple of false starts owing to difficulties in find a regular choir leader.  It is growing steadily in numbers and has already visited a couple of local residential homes to sing carols.  We would love to hear from you if you would like to join.

"We're such a happy bunch.  We all get on and we have a marvellous time singing our hearts out."
